As Islam is increasingly being portrayed as an obscurantist and a violent religion which promotes cruelty, armed militancy, human rights violation and a hindrance to progress and modernization, the Muslim apologists - who go by the label “moderate Muslims” - are desperately trying to defend Islam as a religion of peace, progress and modernity. In their desperation, Muslim apologists are often making extraordinary claims such as Islam’s contribution to human civilization as a measure of Islam progressiveness.

Following are excerpts from a debate on secularism and Islamism in the Middle East with Syrian author Nidhal Na’isa and Egyptian cleric Sheik Ibrahim Al-Khouli, which aired on Al-Jazeera TV on October 30, 2007.

Syrian author Nidhal Na’isa began his career in journalism as a teenager, at the government dailies Al-Thawra and Syria Times,but today he is a vocal opponent of the Arab regimes and the pan-Arab ideology, as well as of Islamism and Islamist terrorism. He has written that due to the Islamist “tsunami,” the Middle East could be declared an “intellectual disaster zone”; that if one were to try to sell pan-Arab identity to “the bushmen and the cannibals” they wouldn’t buy it; and that the pan-Arab media is “a harbinger of ill, pain, and destruction.” In contrast, he praises the West for its humanism and its respect for the individual, and writes that, given the current state of affairs in the Arab world, the real question is not “why does the West hate us?” but rather why it does not.

President Karimov claims to be waging a war on Islamic terrorism; we investigate the claim that he is more often waging a war on his own people, many of whom simply wish to worship outside state controls. Many of his 25 million people see him as the nation’s saviour, crushing Islamic fundamentalism by closing down Mosques and jailing Muslims for engaging in normal religious practices. But some see a darker side to the campaign: “I think it is important to understand that what Uzbekistan has been engaged in for the past for years has not been a war on terrorism, but rather a very brutal campaign against its own people,” comments Acacia Shields, Human Rights campaigner. With no avenue for protests or redress, the crackdowns have fuelled resentment against Karimov’s regime. Critics now ask whether the repression has crushed revolutionary Islam, or created it.
